After writing all of Chicago's recent hits, lead singer Peter Cetera is leaving the group to pursue a solo recording and acting career, according to the show biz weekly, Variety.

The group's latest album, ''Chicago XVII,'' a multi-platinum seller, spawned four top-10 singles, putting the group at the top of the charts with such Cetera compositions as ''Hard Habit To Break'' and ''You're The Inspiration.''

He plans to record a solo album for Warner Bros. Records. No decision has been made yet as to whether Chicago will replace Cetera for the album ''Chicago XVIII'' this fall.
